One is to modify the deep water seal to extend the failure time of the water seal in the absence of water supply. The other is to develop other isolation and sealing devices to replace the water seal. In recent years, a variety of floor drains without water seals have emerged in the market, but they can mainly be divided into two types

(1) Mechanical waterless floor drain: Mechanical waterless floor drains typically use mechanical devices such as springs, magnets, and bearings, and soft materials to seal the foul smell from the drain. There are roughly several types: spring-type floor drains, self-sealing floor drains with lifting plates, and gravity sliding floor drains, etc.

As the drainage channel of the floor drain is a straight-through type, the water passage section is large and the drainage volume is large. Impurities and dirt are directly flushed into the sewer with the water flow and discharged. However, the sealing core is a screw-in type and is connected to the main body with a clip. Impurities and dirt are prone to accumulate here. Therefore, the inner core must be taken out regularly and cleaned in water, which is very inconvenient to clean. When cleaning, the inner core is usually taken out to make a cleaning opening, and the sewage is directly swept into the floor drain. This is very likely to cause blockage. So the common problem of this kind of mechanical floor drain is its limited service life. Basically, the core of the floor drain needs to be replaced after a few years of use. Moreover, it is very inconvenient to use and requires frequent cleaning, which brings inconvenience to the owner.

(2) Silicone rubber floor drain without water seal: The water seal of this type of floor drain is made of silicone rubber to form a "V" shaped water outlet

The material of this water-free seal core is silicone used to make pacifiers. It closes tightly when not in use and can be opened when there is water. However, since it is a straight-through floor drain, other dirt such as hair may be washed into the drain core with the water flow. But because the silicone material is very likely to remain on the silicone core, there will be gaps, and the anti-odor effect will not be good. Moreover, the biggest drawback of silicone is that it is prone to aging. This type of floor drain core needs to be replaced every few years, which is too costly.

This waterless floor drain is particularly suitable for two types of places: one is places where water is not frequently used and is relatively dry, where there is no need to constantly worry about adding water; Another feature is that it is suitable for use as a drainage floor drain for washing machines. This water-sealless floor drain is of the straight-through type, ensuring smooth and unobstructed drainage. It is particularly suitable for places like washing machines where the instantaneous drainage volume is large. Nowadays, many washing machine floor drains are designed with such interfaces, connecting the washing machine's drain pipe to the floor drain pipe. However, since the direct-through floor drain does not have an anti-odor device, the odorous bacteria inside the floor drain can easily enter the washing machine's pipe.

Nowadays, there are more and more multi-functional floor drains on the market that can solve both drainage and odor prevention problems at the same time. However, these floor drains without water seals are no longer suitable for household bathrooms. First of all, mechanical ones need to be cleaned frequently.
